The Hidden Lives of Trees
A downloadable roleplaying game
The Hidden Lives of Trees is a GMless map-drawing storygame about trees, and nature, and how forests are formed. It is about the passage of decades, and the slow-moving crises of tree-scale time.
The mechanics are inspired by Avery Alder's The Quiet Year and Vincent & Meg Baker's Firebrands / The King is Dead / Dreaming Avalon / etc. Going around the table in turns, players collaborate on a growing ever-changing map of the forest in which their trees live and introduce mini-games (A Drought, A Storm, An Arrival) that offer both danger and opportunity.
The object of the game is to create a forest, and see what becomes of it.
You play to find out how the forest changes with the passing of the years, how it is marked by the crises it endures, and which trees thrive and which perish.
It is a game for between 3 and 6 players. It will take at least an hour, longer the more players you have.
